the steps I took

the pulses

It was like yesterday - I picked up the tiny blue bass guitar since my high school band needed more low ends, and never wanted to stick with another instrument. In around 2023, I was in 3rd year of media management major at Hoa Sen university, Sai Gon, managing film and MV projects. It was hard for me to play gigs after a couple days of non-sleep shooting.

One day, my first-ever bass teacher passed away while I was busy with all of the projects. I wasn’t feel good then. I kept asking myself why I couldn’t work with visual stuff and enjoy my passion for music at the same time.

1st experience with music

the spark

Then I enrolled in a radio production class, where we told creative messages via sound only (and we were nominated for best creative project that year somehow). Coming home, Pak 1 album by Pham Anh Khoa sounded so much better with dad’s brand new amplifier system. Kenshi Yonezu in Chainsaw Man’s intro was so on fire that I watched the whole season in maybe 2 days, holding my bass guitar. I subscribed to Thomas Flight's channel right after watching his video about sound perspectives in The Batman. The Prowler's theme was my definition of creativity.

It sparked me - the fact that sound and music elevates and are elevated by the visual, the art, …

Sound design everyday

the mess

Next thing I remember, I recorded my bass covers with Pro Tools Intro; I moved to the Fairlight tab of Davinci Resolve giving some colors and names to every single track; I put tons of plugin freebies to Tracktion Waveform and mess around with the old Casio midi; … Then folks just invited my to do sound design for their film and TVC projects. I was called to play a live session and found the love of my life. My brother asked me to watch series with him like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto, How To Train Your Dragon, … and we learnt all the melodies by heart.

Just like that, I've been working with sound all the time. And I want to be working with sound all the time <3
